In Appreciation Of Hector Sanchez

June 26, 2012

If last night’s game were a Facebook post, it would have gotten more ‘likes’ than a picture of a baby riding a puppy under an inspirational quote misattributed to Eleanor Roosevelt. Seven scoreless from Zito. Pablo making that ‘X’ shape with his hamate boneless forearms. Doubles bouncing off first base willy nilly. Like, like, like. But I want to single out Hector Sanchez.

When the Giants lost their sparkling young catcher last year, we found ourselves ankle-deep in a lukewarm puddle of Whiteside. When the Giants still-sparkling young catcher needs a day off this year, we find ourselves in the capable hands of a 22-year-old kid who can go 2-for-4 with a couple RBIs and, oh yeah, catch a shutout and it’s really no big deal.

I don’t know what the future holds for Hector; if he keeps getting better (as 22-year-olds are wont to do) it’s hard to imagine him staying a backup catcher forever. We already converted one catcher into an All-Star third baseman, and we’ve got another dude who looks like he can hit at first. Good problems to have, but still potential problems.

That’s for another day, though. Today we celebrate the fact that, one year after the Great Catching Debacle of Aught Eleven, we’ve got not one but two talent-oozing homegrown dudes in the squaaaat.

Like, like, like.
