Can We Play The Rockies Again?

August 6, 2012

Matt Cain peels off his mask to reveal…Todd Wellemeyer! And he would have gotten away with it too, if it weren’t for those darn meddling Cardinals…

I’m basically done pining for Carlos Beltran. If the Giants had re-signed him, there’s almost zero chance they would have also traded for Cabrera. Even though Beltran’s having a slightly better year, I’d rather have Melky over the long haul (assuming the Giants re-sign him, which is indeed an assumption). Plus we’ve got Pence now, and he’s gonna start hitting. Aaaaaany day now.

The Giants just played three games against the Rockies, which is the equivalent of doing a magic show for a bunch of four-year-olds on LSD. Now they’re performing in front of a packed house at whatever big venue magicians perform at. Those fumbled card tricks and awkward sleights of hand ain’t gonna cut it.

The fourth inning was a perfect example. Cabrera and Posey led off with back-to-back singles. In Denver, the Rockies would have immediately done something stupid, like kick an easy grounder or all run into the dugout and start hitting each other with fungo bats like a bunch of deranged Three Stooges impersonators. The Cardinals, being a real baseball team, calmly recorded three outs. The Giants aren’t very good with runners in scoring position. The Rockies covered that up; the Cards won’t be so kind.

This is where I was going to write something about Matt Cain, who has been worse than ordinary since the perfect game. But that’s no fun. Instead, let’s talk about Angel Pagan. The hitting binge in Colorado was easy to write off as, well, a hitting  binge in Colorado. But he looked every bit as good tonight, against an actual pitcher in an actual park with actual air. A hot Pagan with a little pop in the leadoff spot, coupled with the hopefully soon return of Pablo and the hopefully sooner emergence of Pence, makes this lineup look like one that could score. Not 35 runs in three games, but enough to win.

Still, I miss the Rockies.
