Breaking: Madison Bumgarner Is Good

April 2, 2013

NLCS - St Louis Cardinals v San Francisco Giants - Game One

Objectively, Kershaw’s start was better. His was on opening day, Bumgarner’s was on second night. He went nine, Bumgarner went eight. His RBI came on a booming home run to center, Bumgarner’s came on a five-hopper over the mound.

You know what, though? Screw objectivity. That was awesome. The Dodgers opened the season with their ace lefty making mince meat of the Giants lineup. The Giants countered with a lefty of their own who minced plenty of meat.

I’m going back to the pre-game warmup tosses. Right before Posey made his obligatory throw to second, Bumgarner launched a snot rocket. Almost customary at this point, so no big deal. But here’s the thing: the angle of the lights and the Comcast Sports Net camera somehow aligned to paint that snot rocket like the mist off a lake at sunrise. Perfection. I’m not sayin’ it was an omen…I’m not not sayin’ it was an omen. I’m just sayin.’

Bumgarner gets the mucous-coated game ball, no question, but honorable mention to Joaquin Arias for playing a fine first base and rapping out a couple of hits. Utility dudes rarely get the glory. Over the course of a season, though, they matter. A lot. It’s easy to forget Arias was an unknown entity prior to last year, because this year the Giants are counting on him in a big way. It was only one game, of course, but it was a good one.

And, never fear, he still looks like Kobe’s slightly less rapey brother.

OK, maybe slightly more rapey.

OK, maybe slightly more rapey.
